birthday cake

Posted by – 22 Nov ’10

Guess what. It’s my birthday.

This weekend I got to be a part of a cake and ice cream birthday party with two lovely ladies, Tara and Gen. I would say that we outdid any other party I’ve been a part of with mere quantity of delicious cake and ice cream.

We had 3 cakes, more than a dozen cupcakes and two ice cream cakes from Scoops.

cakes and cupcakes

I made a chocolate covered vanilla cake and a red velvet cake. There were chocolate cupcakes too.

But my absolute favorite part…

…was the brown bread ice cream cake. Heaven on a plate. I’ve always wanted to have vegan brown bread ice cream. It was exactly as I imagined it would be. Amazing!

happy birthday

We all wore fluffy tiaras and sang happy birthday and ate loads of cake and ice cream. I had a major sugar overload but it was well worth it.

Oh, and I kind of fell in love with Tara’s cat Lucky.

How cute is she?

Homemade for Haiti

Posted by – 27 Jan ’10

This past weekend I participated in the Homemade for Haiti bake sale hosted by Home Ec Shop in Silverlake. We were able to raise an amazing $1,220 for Doctors without Borders.

I cooked up some of my favorite cupcakes and some of my best sellers in hopes that they could get the most money to those in need.

While the bake sale itself wasn’t exclusively vegan, they had a whole table full of vegan goodness (and even soy milk for coffee)! The shop is so cute too and all the bake goods were packaged up to be exponentially adorable. You can see more photos on flickr.

If you want to do something really easy to help with the relief effort in Haiti, there are a ton of vegan bake sales going on across the country.  I’m particularly envious of the NYC vegan bake sale at Mooshoes (which coincidentally uses one of my cupcake photos taken by Studiodrome). There is even a bake sale here in Los Angeles this Sunday.

Also, if you’re in Los Angeles, you can currently get a hold of these cupcakes at Meet Market or at Vegan Bake Sale. Yay!

Hodge-podge

I have so much to tell you! I’ve been completely consumed with crafting for holiday presents. I’m attempting to wrap all my gifts in reusable gift bags this year. That means that even for the gifts I’m not making, there’s still a bit of work put in to each one. The worst part is, I can’t even show off the gifts I’ve made yet in case any of the recipients read this blog. Don’t worry though, I’ll have some recaps after the holidays with some reviews and such.

Besides the hours devoted to sewing and the like, I do have some exciting news. Cupcakes from Vegan Bake Sale are now available at Meet Market in Silverlake. I just delivered the first order of Cookies & Cream, Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Spice cupcakes. Go get some! It will probably be your last chance before the holidays.

This year is going to be my cats’ first Christmas living with us. They’re loving all the boxes they get to play with (and a few catnip treats). It’s like cardboard box heaven for them. We adopted Meeme and Mochi on January 3rd of this year and they make me happy every single day. Seriously. I love them so much. Part of the reason I want to bring this up is that LA animal services is offering 50% off adoption fees for the holidays. Not that the fees are even very high to begin with, but it’s just that much more incentive to open your home and heart to one of these animals in need. If you’re considering getting an animal this year, I urge you to turn to the public animal shelters as these are usually the animals at highest risk of being put down. Not to mention they make it extremely easy for you to adopt.

Oh there’s so much more to say, but it will have to wait a little while still. Till then…

Bicycle photos and Cinefamily nostalgia

Just a quick update to let all you vegans know about some cool upcoming events that you won’t want to miss.

Pics or it didn't happen

First of all, if you’ve been missing the tasty decadence that was Doomie’s Home Cookin’ you have a chance this Saturday to bask in the glory days. Team Midnight Ridazz is hosting a photo show to raise money for Aids Life Cycle. The show will feature photos from Los Angeles artists (including my favorite Studiodrome) documenting local bike culture. I don’t know the entire roster but I know a few of the associated artists have really amazing photographs and they’ll be selling for dirt cheap. Not to mention, it’s all for a good cause. Besides that though, DOOMIE’S will be catering the event, so you can come and get a taste of their food if you never had the chance or just miss it like crazy.

Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater

Also, this Sunday, The Silent Movie Theater is having a rummage and bake sale. From their website:

Sunday, May 10th, from noon-5pm, is our First Annual Cinefamily Rummage and Bake Sale, a wonderful opportunity for all of you to come by and sift through (and purchase!) the various relics and oddities that have been cluttering the theater’s hallways, stockrooms, and storage spaces since we opened. Items range from the typical (audio and film equipment) to the quaint (vintage books and posters) to the NSFW (seriously, I can’t even print it here). Come for the delicious treats, stay to pick out something special from our magical stockpile of weirdness. You might even find something for your mom (she mentioned you don’t call enough).

Besides the fact that this is a really cool place and I’m sure they’re going to have amazing things for sale, there will be cupcakes from Vegan Bake Sale for you to enjoy while you browse. The Silent Movie Theater is one of my favorite theaters in Los Angeles and has some really fantastic screenings. This theater is one of the few places you can see rare films in amazing condition and obscurities that will blow your mind. Despite the name, not all the movies are silent, but they do have a handful of those as well. They’re also a non-profit so all the proceeds go to obtaining even more awesome films to share. If you can’t make it to this sale, you should still check out the theater if you have a chance.

The Silent Movie Theater is located at 611 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, 90036

Anyway, I’ll be there! You should be there! We should all be there! See you this weekend.
