donut love

the lonely donut

Ever since we had our Twin Peaks marathon I’ve been thinking about donuts. A lot. In fact, yesterday I told Shawn I am going to open a tiny donut shop, just so I can have them whenever I want. Ok, not really. I would like to try out some recipes though.

I’ve always liked my donuts light and fluffy, and fried. The best donuts I ever made were spudnuts (potato donuts) that were soft and airy. If only I had written down the recipe. I’ve vowed to try again sometime. On the other hand, I’ve been dying to make these beignets forever now too.

rice crispie donuts

The thing with fried donuts though is that they’re really only good for a little while. It doesn’t take long for them to get that weird old donut texture, so unless you’re eating them right out of the fryer, they’re not as awesome. So despite my love of all things fried, I am really starting to like baked donuts. I guess I’ll have to get a donut pan to make these.

Plus if I get a donut pan, I can make rice crispie treat donuts. Or maple donuts. Or any kind of donut I want. Donuts forever!

Do you have a favorite kind of donut?

Donuts forever! My favorite donuts in the whole world are the apple cider donuts fresh from the fryer and sprinkled with sugar from my hometown apple orchard. I get a craving for them that drags me home across half the country when the fall chill hits the air. I’ve never found cider donuts as good anywhere else, but I’d love to be able to make them at home!

Oh man apple cider donuts sound really good. I suppose that’s a fall thing but I kind of want them now.

THIS! Apple orchard donuts are the best. That was one of the best things about living in Michigan — there were apple orchards with cider mills everywhere. When I was a senior in high school, we would leave campus if we had two off periods in a row and go nom on the cider mill donuts a few miles away.

Fall in North Dakota is just not as much fun as it was in Michigan because of the dearth of apple orchards and cider mills. I guess there are some in Minnesota, but they are a bit of a drive.

Shoot girl, you are speaking my language. Instead of a wedding cake we had a huge pile of donuts! I have a mini donut pan, a regular sized one, and then a weird regular sized one but without the holes (which I’m never sure what to do with). You’ve inspired me to get those pans out and put to good use!

Beignets!! I’m from Louisiana and I love to go back and visit so we can stop at Cafe du Monde or Coffee Call for beignets and cafe au lait.

My absolute favourites are the plain glazed ones from Krispy Kreme; I’ve never worked out how to make them that good! I’m from the UK and usually have to hunt down a big city supermarket to get them, though.
