books and books

blackbird house

There’s nothing like getting totally lost in a book. I have a little bit of a book problem, in which I want to compulsively buy books. I refrain mostly, but it’s my one shopping weakness. Some people like shoes or dvds. I like books.

It’s been less of a problem since I got my kindle, since I will only purchase a new book when I finish the one I’m currently reading. I take the darn thing with me everywhere. Best part, no more filling up space on my bookshelves, which are stacked double deep.

Except for cookbooks. I still have that problem.

I just finished Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman. I love her. I want to live in her books. So magical and tragic and wonderful. I need to pick the next one of hers to read.

prometheus rising

I also bought Prometheus Rising as I lost my original copy. It’s a little wacky, but I can totally get behind some of the concepts. I’m finally making Shawn read it.

So what books are you loving right now? I’m always looking for recommendations.

How to Be an American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
    Honolulu by Alan Brennert
    Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie
    Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger

These are all either old favorites of mine or books I’ve finished recently but I’d recommend all of ’em.

Our Kindle has been really useful for the same reason- keeping the bookshelves from taking over the entire apartment. I’ll have to give that R.A. Wilson book a shot- I remember reading the Illuminatus Trilogy decades ago and liking it.

You know I love Alice Hoffman! I’m currently reading (and loving) Just Kids by Patti Smith.

i was also just going to recommend Just Kids, which i just finished & loved. i don’t have any other recommendations right now, but i’m probably going to lurk this to see what other people suggest as i’ve been wanting to start a new book!

  4. I am a total Kindle addict. It is in my purse at all times.

I just read Emily, Alone by Stewart O’Nan which I loved. Also recently loved The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. Have you read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion–it’s one of my all time faves. Right now I’m reading Orientation: And Other Stories by Daniel Orozco–I’m really digging it.

    Are you on Goodreads?

I think I may have already recommended “Oryx and Crake” to you by Margaret Atwood. I just finished the sequel which I enjoyed perhaps even more, “Year of the Flood”.

You have, but a reminder is always good 🙂
Especially excited about books with sequels.

Ok, here’s another. I know this is weird but I’m gonna recommend a book I haven’t read yet, but have heard so much good stuff about it that I am eager to, and it seems like it might be right up your alley as well.

      ‘Among Others’ by Jo Walton

I’m waiting for the paperback to come out but I think it’s available on Kindle now.

Yes! I love Robert Anton Wilson. My boyfriend and I together practically have his entire catalog. Have you read the Cosmic Trigger series? RAW was a great soul. One of my heroes.

    • miss alix says:

i haven’t read any of his other books but it looks like i’ll have to. i love prometheus rising and think about it often. i’m sure the others would intrigue me.

    • I, too, recommend Cosmic Trigger! It’s been almost ten years since I read the first book, and it was brilliant. On the fiction front, I highly recommend, “Carter Beats the Devil” by Glen David Gold, and both of Wally Lamb’s books, “I know this Much is True” and “She’s Come Undone”, both just absolutely gorgeous. Happy Summer reading!

Thanks for the recommendation, I just added Blackbird House to my list. This week I read the Violets of March by Sarah Jio and In the Woods by Tana French. They were both good; In the Woods was especially creepy.

  8. I am a total book addict, too! I recently decided that I am going to try to not buy any more books until I read the (MANY!!) unread ones on my shelf. I have like 50 vegan cookbooks, too… It’s pretty ridiculous. (Though I use almost all of them!) 🙂
