wedding quilt in progress
I finally made some progress on our wedding quilt. Instead of a guestbook, we had our guests sign squares of fabric to be sewn together. While I am still very happy with this idea (I’d much rather have a quilt than a guestbook) it probably would have helped if I’d ever made a quilt before. Ever.
Not that it’s going badly, but it started out a bit rough. Mainly because a handful of squares, cut a the last moment before the wedding, were not only different sizes, they were not even really square. On top of that, without any guidelines for signing, some guest wrote all the way to the very edges of the fabric, leaving no seam allowance at all.
After arranging the swatches into their pattern, I traced new square guides onto each piece, so I would have a uniform size while trying not to cut off bits of what people wrote. I then basted each strip together and got to sewing, first making vertical strips and then sewing those together.
I knew from the beginning it would not be perfect, and I’m quite happy with how it’s coming along. Next I plan to put some edging fabric so its a bit larger and then I’ll have to choose a backing. I’m not sure how I’ll stitch the front to the back, since I don’t want to detract from the writing.
Any ideas from seasoned quilters out there? Actually an suggestions would be helpful really.
the piano
Before we head off for the weekend, I’m bringing you another favorite film of mine: The Piano. This epically beautiful film by Jane Campion is both visually stunning and heart wrenching. It’s the story of Ada McGrath, a woman who has willed herself not to speak, who travels to New Zealand with her daughter for an arranged marriage.
The film takes place in the 1850s New Zealand, showing the raw beginnings of colonization on the island. It contrasts the strict, formal European culture with the untamed wilderness of the island. This contrast is embodied by the beach on which Ada and her daughter arrive. Read More
the last days of Pure Luck
What do you do when your favorite restaurant and eternal hang out decides to up and close on you? You eat there as many times as humanly possible before they shut the doors for good.
Pure Luck has been a staple in Shawn and my life together since we started dating. Not only do we eat there at least once a week, it’s always the spot we pick when meeting friends. We had birthday celebrations there. We shot part of our movie there. Every time we go we run into people we know. Totally integral place in our life. And it’s closing. Ugh.
To commemorate, here are some of our last meals in all the glory. Read More
a woman under the influence
Today is the day I introduce a new feature on Cute & Delicious, one that I’ve been wanting to share for some time now.
I love movies. Adore them.
The truth is, I like movies more than cooking fancy recipes or riding bikes or knitting or sewing. Shawn and I watch a lot of movies. Countless. If you’ve been reading for awhile, you might have heard about our Halloween movie parties where we’ve watched horror movies for days straight without stopping (or sleeping).
Since movies are such a big part of my life and I wanted to incorporate that love a little bit more on the blog. I’ll be featuring a few films here and there that I love, just to share them with you all.
I’m starting with one of the most amazing films Woman Under the Influence It’s a portrait of a slightly eccentric woman, but also a peek into a family in 1974. While many of Cassavetes’ films are dominated by a male presence, this film is really an ode to Gena Rowlands.
I was completely captivated by this film the first time I saw it. Rowlands seamlessly portrays a woman who is on the brink of normalcy, just a touch stranger than everyone else. It is uncomfortable to see her act out, but you love her all the same. You can see how her husband, played by Peter Falk, loves her just as much because of her quirks as in spite of them. It is an intimate story of a family that could be like any other but just isn’t quite. Read More
memorial day weekend in photos
Hope everyone had a lovely long weekend. It was nice to have an extra day for things. We had zero plans for the holidays but still went to a few bbqs and watched a few movies which was nice. And I did a lot of laundry. Yep.
In keeping with the theme of the weekend of not doing too much, I didn’t quite finish the posts I had planned, but I do have a bunch of lovely photos to make up for it.
