Work in progress
In between copious amounts of baking and projects, we’ve been trying to renovate and reorganize our apartment. One of the ideas that I’m in the middle of is updating the large book case in our living room. It has always been filled with stuff, masks, bike gear and various odds and ends. I wanted to make it a little more presentable and hide some of the storage aspects. I embarked on a crazy mission to not only fill it with our books that were placed randomly around the house, but also to cover them all in colored paper.
First of all, I had no idea how many books we had hidden away in various drawers and closets that now had a place to be. Second, covering books takes quite a bit longer than I thought. Third, nice colored paper is expensive and doesn’t cover nearly as many books as I would like. It seemed like a good idea in the first place, but now it seems like a daunting task to finish.
As you can see, I’m about half way done. I’ve covered the storage boxes with mat board as well. Soon hopefully we’ll get some handles for them so they actually open without the use of a fork or some other implement.
In any case, I think it is much improved from before. Please excuse all the strange things hanging out in our place. You accumulate a great deal of oddities when you make movies. Hopefully I’ll have a finished update soon enough, along with some other cool renovations in the apartment.
i have the same expedits in my living room and started making them more ‘presentable’ this weekend too. i found some baskets at the container store that fit the cubby holes pretty good that help organizing stuff. i have way too much shit and dont quite know what to do with it all.
The new version looks a lot nicer as long as you can find things still. The colored book covers would be sacrificing too much practicality for me though. I wouldn’t be able to remember which book was which after a year or so.
I’ve had to get clear plastic storage tubs for all the odds and ends that don’t fit anywhere when there aren’t any closets.
I am still planning on labeling the books on the spines, but I’m doing fine so far with the fact that they’re color coded. I know the most frequently used cookbooks by size anyway.
i dig it. even with only half covered in paper, i think the books look perfect.
I want that monkey mask.
This is totally inspiring to me. We’re in the process of cleaning some stuff out too, and I’m trying to get more organized in general. It must feel so good for you to look at those before and after photos!
I love it! I’m so inspired! Covering the books in that beautiful colored paper is such a great idea, but I can see how daunting the project might be. Looks lovely, though.
I absolutely love how you’ve brightened up a white bookshelf and wall with color theme cubes! I wish I hadn’t given up my old expedit now. Definitely cute.
This is just another example of how crazy talented you are. Sorry to complement you so much. But you’re so cool!
