triangle baby quilt
Hello November! I’ve been away from the blog for a bit longer than I like. We had a whirlwind trip this past weekend to visit Shawn’s family and attend his sister, Amy’s, baby shower. The exciting thing, besides getting to spend some time with family and catch some of the beauty of fall in the East, I finally get to share this quilt. Since it was a gift for the baby, it’s been a secret project while I’ve worked on it for the past few months.
Shawn and I labored over choosing the fabrics and settled on some contrasting colors to go with a cute raccoon print. Since it’s a crib sized quilt, it didn’t take terribly long to sew together once all the triangles were cut. I hand bound the edges and actually enjoyed doing it for the first time.
I was really excited to give Amy & Jason the quilt knowing it is something that their baby will have for years to come. I still have a quilt my great grandmother gave to me for my first birthday and it means a lot to me. I like to think that I’m carrying on some small tradition of quilt making.
little quilt
This little quilt may be the nerdiest quilt I make. It is officially my movie theater quilt. I am always getting cold in theaters, particularly older ones with massive, unregulated air conditioners. This little quilt is just big enough to cover my legs and fight off chill but not so big that I seem like a crazy lady bringing a blanket into a theater with me. It’s cute and colorful and folds up really small so I can fit it in my bag. Perfect!
And Mochi likes it too.
sew modern
This past weekend I took some time to explore the adorable fabric shop Sew Modern. I spent forever just looking at all the different prints and great fabrics. The whole place has the most welcoming atmosphere and I could squander away hours there. They even had a handful of Colette Patterns and I spied some designs from Creative Thursday. Browsing through all the fabrics instilled an even greater desire to focus on some sewing projects and really bite the bullet on quilting. So I’m working on a plan for this epic quilt and will be back to get pretty fabrics soon.
finished wedding quilt
Finally I finished our wedding quilt. Once the sewing started it came together fairly easily. I found some lovely fabric for the borders and backing that I just love. Everything was going swimmingly until I got to the binding. Holy hell that took forever. There must be a more efficient way to sew the binding but as it was all by hand it cost me several hours in front of the tv. Not that I mind, but time is precious commodity at the moment.
In making this quilt I truly fell for quilting (as if I need another craft to love). I think I was done in when I went to a quilting store to get the remaining fabric for the border and backing. There were so many modern, beautiful, printed fabrics; I was smitten. I hope I can find time to make quilts in my future as It’s so nice to make something that feels like it has a use and will last for ages. That being said, I’m not sure what to do with this quilt as I’d like to preserve it with all the messages from our wedding guests. Ideas? I’m thinking it might look nice hung on the wall if i could find the space.
